Preview: New features coming in January 2010

Posted by Jennifer Stein on December 30, 2009

As 2009 comes to a close, we thought you might be interested in a sneak peek at what’s coming up in the next few weeks:

Broadcast results integrated with News results

Right now, your TV monitoring hits reside in a separate result set from the rest of your News monitoring hits.  As of January 1st, TV monitoring hits will be integrated with your News results.   It’s now a single click and a one-stop-shop for all your results – news, and Broadcast.  You’ll have a better overall picture of your coverage each day, regardless of medium.

Transcript and video player in a single page; simplified TV navigation

Until January 1st, viewing TV results is a 4-step process:  view Transcript, view Video, Save to Folder, Download.  You couldn’t skip steps, even if you knew your ultimate destination was the Download function.  A few things are changing as of January 1st:

  1. A video player will appear at the top of the Transcript view page.  This integrates these functions and eliminates one of the steps above.  There will also be a single price for this new view.
  2. Saving the “Peek” information to a Folder will be available for free.  Again, this will allow you to create richer, more complete Media Analysis reports.  Please note that charges will apply for viewing Transcripts and Video clips.   There is also a fee applicable for sharing TV content with colleagues.
  3. You will no longer be “re-charged” for viewing the same clip more than once, whether or not you save it to a F0lder.
  4. You will be able to jump right to the “Share” or “Download” steps directly from the transcript/video page.

Add links to external content to your Saved/Shared Folders

Although FPinfomart covers over 4,500 news sources across almost all media, we know that there is additional content available online that you’d like to incorporate into your Newsletters, your Media Analysis Reports, and your monitoring activities.  To assist you, we’ll be offering the ability to add information about, and a link to, non-FPinfomart content to your Saved Folders.  You’ll be asked to categorize the content on some data points such as geography, Tone, medium, etc., so that we can help you build accurate reports.

Importing content can be performed by clicking a link within your Folders, or, even more conveniently, by using a bookmarklet.

We’ll provide more details about this exciting feature when it launches in early January.

More details about all of these changes will be posted here early in January.

As always, please contact our Helpdesk if you have any questions.  They can be reached by e-mail (helpdesk@canwest.com), or by phone at 1-800-661-7678.

FP Markets – Canadian Demographics – updated for 2010

Posted by Jennifer Stein on December 16, 2009

Editor’s Note:  The 2012 version of this publication is now available for order.  Please see the post on the 2012 edition for details.

FP Markets 2010In addition to our flagship FPinfomart.ca product, Canwest Digital Media also offers additional print and electronic products based on the impeccable and in-depth data gathered by our in-house FP DataGroup.  I wanted to take a moment to bring one of these resources to your attention.

Our newest release is the 2010 edition of the FP Markets Canadian Demographics book and electronic product.

FP Markets includes information on more than 1,200 Canadian Markets with statistics on population, households, income, retail sales, labour force, occupations by major groups, schooling, housing, marital status, home language, household expenditures, Industrial development contacts and more.

It is available as a book, or as a downloadable electronic version with data for a particular region or the entire country.  The electronic version allows you to construct advanced search queries  to cross-reference and narrow in on the data to meet your specifications.  You can print just the information you require, or save it to your own hard drive, without the possibility of manual errors.

Data is gathered from three trusted providers:  Polk Automotive Intelligence, Pitney Bowes, and CardOnline, and compiled into a comprehensive resource for anyone requiring demographic information on any area of Canada.  It is important to note that this information is NOT available on FPinfomart.ca .

Pricing and ordering information are available on our FP Markets page, but please note that discounts are available to current FPinfomart subscribers.

Your FPinfomart New Year’s Resolution

Posted by Jennifer Stein on December 15, 2009

It’s that time of year again.  Time to examine our daily lives, decide what needs attention, and make some plans for how we’ll accomplish our goals in the new year.

One of the things we see consistently whenever we survey our clients is that while many of you are using FPinfomart regularly, you are using only a small portion of the wide spectrum of features and functions available to you with your subscription.  There are so many tools and features we provide, and some of them may speed your workflow, help you find additional intelligence, or improve your user experience.

So, I challenge you to spend some time between now and the end of the calendar year clicking buttons on our site that you haven’t tried yet.  Experiment.  Look for tools that could change the way you use FPinfomart content.   Make an FPinfomart New Year’s resolution:  as of January 1st, incorporate a previously unexplored FPinfomart feature into your everyday work routine!

Consider whether you could use Alerts to bring the content you need right to your inbox, as it becomes available. Are you using Folders to collect, collate, and share the content you’ve discovered?  Or perhaps you might try our Media Analysis functions to add some quantitative analysis to all the content you read.

Do you distribute content to end-users?  How long does it take you?  Have you seen our Newsletter Publisher?  It must might be the content distribution tool that makes you the office hero.

Have you explored the FP Advisor tools?  Did you know that we have information on over 450,000 Canadian companies, both public and private?  And information on over 17,000 Canadian executives?

Are you monitoring broadcast media for news that affects your organization?  If not, you may be missing out on important coverage from 82 TV channels and 30 50 radio stations.  If your subscription doesn’t already include access to our Broadcast Monitoring module, contact your sales representative for a trial.

There are many other features and functions for you to explore on FPinfomart.ca.  I hope you’ll take me up on my challenge.  Let me know what you discover – come back in the new year and add your comments here!  In the meantime, what do you think you’re most likely to try?

Keeping up with daily online reading – a personal perspective

Posted by Jennifer Stein on December 4, 2009

It’s no secret that the news cycle is faster, more continuous, and more online than ever.  In addition to using FPinfomart for my Personal Profiles results, and to browse the headlines in a few major papers, I also use an RSS reader (Google Reader), along with a desktop Twitter client, to keep up with the the intra-day happenings of interest to me in the social media sphere.

I’ve noticed a change, though, in my own social media browsing behaviour.  It used to be that I would fire up Google Reader and scan my RSS-fed results, and THEN browse what was new on Twitter.  However, lately, I’m finding that it’s more efficient to read the Twitter content FIRST.  It seems  that a significant amount of the news reported via social media is available concisely in Twitter (the inherent nature of the 140-character-per-Tweet limit), and I can then use my RSS feeds to fill in any gaps and flesh out more details on topics that are especially engaging.

Have you noticed any shift in how you browse the news online?  Share your perspective in the comments.
