Posted by fpinfomart on April 30, 2010

The daily commuter paper 24 Hours (Toronto Edition ONLY) is now live on Fpinfomart.ca.  It publishes Monday – Friday, and our archival coverage for this source starts June 6, 2008.

We’ve also added two weekly Ontario papers to our database:  The Londoner and the Wallaceburg Courier Press both publish weekly on Thursdays. We have loaded two  issues of each (Thursday April 22 & 29, 2010).  The archive for these papers will continue to accumulate  from this point forward.

A musical production featuring the rock music of the 1980′s is currently playing at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre. Answer the following questions about this stage show:

  1. What is the name of the play?
  2. Name the male and female lead performers.
  3. In which recent Mirvish production did this female lead star? How did she earn THAT role?
  4. What still-popular tune closes the show?
  5. Provide a citation for your answer.

(Hint – all these questions can be answered from a single article, though if you consult multiple FPinfomart articles that’s ok too).

Two exciting enhancements to our Newsletter Publisher

Posted by Jennifer Stein on April 27, 2010

Our Newsletter Publisher (part of the Intranet Toolkit) is a convenient method to distribute content in a tidy package to your end-users.  You can Publish as many newsletters as you need, on whatever schedule suits your end-users needs.

Today we’re pleased to announce two enhancements to our Newsletter Publisher feature, both of which have been implemented in response to your suggestions:

  1. Sort the order of stories within your Newsletter folders
  2. Include the full text of documents within the Newsletter E-mail

Select order of stories within your Newsletter folders

One of the most common pieces of feedback we’ve received since launching the Newsletter is that you would like to be able to customize the order in which articles appear.  We now offer simple drag-and-drop sorting in Newsletters.  Simply proceed through the publishing process to the Preview screen.  Once in the Preview, you can drag and drop articles into the desired order.

Please note that although the articles will appear in the order you specify within the Newsletter, their sort order within your Saved Folder is NOT changed.

Include the full text of documents within the Newsletter E-mail

Our newsletter provides a convenient summary of stories you’ve selected, and allows your end-users to click through to the full text of the articles.  End-users must be IP-authenticated in order to be able to access these full text documents.

However some of our customers have expressed a desire to include the full text of the articles within the e-mailed newsletter itself.  With today’s changes, you are now able to select whether your newsletter will contain ONLY the summaries, with headlines linked to the full text on FPinfomart, OR, to include the full text within the body of the e-mail.  If this second option is selected, the links in the headlines will jump the reader to that article within the e-mail itself.

Newsletter Settings

To change your newsletter's setup to include full text, click the Settings for the Newsletter you wish to edit.

Newsletter format

Then select the Full Articles option from the Format section.

Update:  Here is a video tutorial on setting up and sending Newsletters using the Newsletter Publisher:

Five Steps for Consumer Brands to Earn Social Currency [Fast Company]

Posted by Jennifer Stein on April 23, 2010

In social media, as in traditional media monitoring, quantity does not always trump quality.  It’s important to focus on the value of social engagement rather than jumping onto the bandwagon with no purpose or goal in mind.  It’s more effective to recruit citizen ambassadors for your brand than to dominate the social media space with your own crafted messages and gimmicks.

As companies amass ever-larger collections of Facebook fans, Twitter followers, and YouTube audiences, they should ask themselves one question: What are we doing with them? “There is a lot of wasted effort in social media,” says Erich Joachimsthaler, managing director at Vivaldi Partners, an international brand consultancy. “We forget that these programs have to pay into something, a shared value or a social context where the product actually gets used.”

What’s valuable isn’t mere buzz but what Joachimsthaler calls “social currency.” “There’s more to ‘social’ than social media,” he says. A new study by Vivaldi Partners and Lightspeed Research, which fielded the data, examines more than 60 companies and assesses customers’ brand affiliations, advocacy, and sense of community, among other factors, for how they create true value for the companies, no matter whether it’s online or off. The results reveal some surprising insights about the limits of social media.

The proliferation of ash from a volcano in Iceland has been disrupting air travel in Europe and across the globe for the past few days.  Ash from a volcano has caused a near-miss for a commercial airliner in the past.

  2. On what date did this incident occur?
  3. What airline, and model of plane was involved?
  4. Provide a citation for your response (headline, publication name, date of publication).

You may cite an article published at the time of the incident, or one mentioning it more recently (a resurgence of interest in the topic has provided a recap of the incident in multiple sources).

History & Evolution of FPinfomart

Posted by Jennifer Stein on April 16, 2010

Tomorrow, April 17th, marks exactly 10 years since I began working with FPinfomart and its predecessor products. I thought I’d take the opportunity at this personal milestone to share with you a history of FPinfomart [PDF] which we prepared in June 2006, when we celebrated the 20-year anniversary of our product line.

Although there have been multitudes of changes even since this history was prepared in 2006, it is still fascinating to me to review the evolution of a product from a text-based archive and research tool (with a handful of sources) to the web-based multimedia, multi-functional platform we offer today. And we’re still changing, building & enhancing features, and adding sources every single week.

You can see a PDF illustrating our evolution from 1986-2006, or view a textual timeline highlighting milestones.

As you browse the descriptions and illustrations, you may recognize the bones of the FPinfomart product you use today – a true evolution!

For a summary of more recent changes and upgrades, and a perspective on the volume of changes we make each year, please see my year-end post summarizing the changes for 2009.

Thanks for indulging my personal nostalgia!  Happy weekend, everyone.

Replay it: Google search across the Twitter archive [Official Google Blog]

Posted by Jennifer Stein on April 15, 2010

People are turning to Twitter more and more as a search mechanism, for real-time results on an infinite variety of topics.  One of the limitations of this, however, is that due to content volume it has been difficult to maintain a historical record of Tweets.  Searching for Tweets more than about 3 months old has been next-to-impossible.

Starting today, you can zoom to any point in time and “replay” what people were saying publicly about a topic on Twitter.
