“Broadcast Notice” – what is it?

Posted by Jennifer Stein on May 31, 2010

Based on feedback from users who were not aware that they had access to transactionally-chargeable broadcast content, we’ve implemented a Broadcast Notice acknowledgment page.

The next time you click to view a broadcast item (TV or Radio) you’ll be presented with a Broadcast Notice screen reminding you that transactional charges may apply to the use of this type of content.  You’ll be required to tick a box to acknowledge that you’re aware of this before you can view the content.

You will only see this screen once. After you’ve submitted your acknowledgment, you won’t be bothered by this Broadcast Notice again.

This Broadcast Notice launched as part of our recent changes to Broadcast Monitoring.

Broadcast Monitoring improvements launched today (June 1st)

Posted by Jennifer Stein on May 31, 2010

Yesterday’s post outlined a few changes to our broadcast monitoring service.  This post elaborates on these, and offers some screenshots.

Radio changes:

Increase in monitored stations from 30 to 50 Canadian radio stations

For a complete list of all stations we’re now monitoring, click here.

Self-service, online access to the full auto-generated transcript, and/or the audio clip of the broadcast

Until today, our radio monitoring service consisted of summary notes within FPinfomart.ca, with the extra step of manually ordering (and paying for) full transcripts and audio clips.  Our radio monitoring service now provides the full transcripts (automatically generated by speech-to-text technology), as well as the audio clips themselves, right within the FPinfomart.ca product.  Your radio monitoring subscription includes unlimited access to the transcript documents, and a generous annual allotment of audio streams.

Radio Peeks

You can browse 24 hours of radio content, for 50 stations. Scroll through the peeks in 10-minute segments.

Radio transcript

View the complete transcript, instantly. Play the associated audio file. And, download a permanent MP3 copy to your desktop (extra fees apply for downloads).

Downloadable audio clips (MP3 format)

NOTE:  Radio download is not available at the time of launch.  This feature will be made available within the next few days.

If you elect to download an MP3 copy of an audio clip, you’ll be sent an e-mail with a link to the downloadable file.

Radio Download Form

Use this form to request an MP3 download of a radio clip.

Broadcast Download e-mail

You'll be sent an e-mail within 10 minutes of your request, with a link to the downloadable file.

Access recently requested downloads from the new Broadcast Downloads page.

Select and customize start- and end-times for transcripts and audio clips

Choose the minute in which to start your clip, and the length of the clip to play or download.  (See second screenshot in the “Self-Service” section, above).

Monitoring 24 hours per day, 7 days per week

We are now monitoring every minute of broadcast for the 50 stations we cover.  Our previous service monitored only those programs classified specifically as “News.”

Faster turn-around times

Summary notes used to take 4-6 hours past broadcast time to appear on FPinfomart.ca.   With today’s upgrades, you may now access transcripts and audio files approximately 30 minutes after they’re broadcast on the radio.  And, because you no longer need to order transcripts or audio clips from us, you have instant access to the text and audio files you want.

TV Changes:

Select and customize start- and end-times for transcripts and video clips

Just like with radio, above, you’re now able to select the exact minute you’d like your video clip to begin, and desired duration.

TV Start and end times

Customize the start time and duration of your tv clip.

New download formats available

When requesting a downloadable copy of a TV clip, you now have a choice of two new file formats: MP4 (Quicktime) and WMV (Windows Media).  Many customers found the previously-available Flash format difficult to use.  We hope you’ll find these more univeral video formats to be an improvement.

TV Download form

Download clips in your choice of MP4 or WMV formats.

FPinfomart Heartbeat – Social Media Engagement

Posted by Jennifer Stein on May 27, 2010

Most social media experts agree that organizations must participate in conversations in the social media space.  While monitoring (passive listening) has almost always been the standard practice in traditional media monitoring, it is becoming more and more accepted that when it comes to social media, companies should become active in a multi-directional dialogue, in addition to simple monitoring.

What people have to say about your company, your products, your competitors, and other issues in your industry is shaping the public’s perception and opinions.  It is crucial that correct, accurate information is available.  Social Media is where the community goes to express their opinions, recount their experiences, and seek information from others who may have grass-roots information about their subject of interest.  Your organization needs to have a voice in these conversations.

To facilitate this process, FPinfomart Heartbeat allows you to participate directly in the social conversation relevant to your organizations in two popular media – Twitter, and Facebook.

Linking your Twitter account, and Facebook fan or other public pages to Heartbeat allows you to respond and converse in these media as soon as conversations requiring participation are identified through the monitoring process.   You can identify top influences and contact them when and if this becomes necessary.  And, keeping all of this engagement in a single platform allows you to take advantage of the workflow management functionality of the product, leaving a complete and detailed engagement trail for measurement and follow-up.

FPinfomart Heartbeat allows you to centralize and track your social media monitoring and engagement activities in a single platform.

Our customer demo of Heartbeat ends today.  Consider joining us at our final online open house session, Friday May 28th at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

FPinfomart Heartbeat – the power of “Compare”

Posted by Jennifer Stein on May 26, 2010

One of the biggest challenges when monitoring social media is dealing with the sheer volume of coverage.  It simply isn’t practical to read the hundreds, or potentially even thousands of relevant results you’ll retrieve each day.  It’s critical to have tools at your disposal to make sense of all this data.  You need to be able to “slice and dice” your results in a flexible way, to instantly apply meaning to an otherwise overwhelming amount of information.

There are a lot of powerful features in FPinfomart Heartbeat, but one of my favourites is the “Compare” tab.  This screen allows you to not only compare yourself to your competitor(s) across a set of insightful data points, but also to drill down into specific aspects of the social conversation, and relate them to your own company and your competitors.

Take, for example, our Livestock Agriculture demo.  The default Compare screen shows us how much conversation volume is happening as it pertains to each of the competitors (in this example we’ve defined the competitors as beef, pork, poultry and lamb).

Competitor comparison

The default "Compare" screen compares your volume of coverage in social media to that of your competitors.

As you scroll down from this volume comparison, you’ll also see comparison across the competitors of sentiment, as well as geo-demographic information such as gender, age, and country of residence.

However, this comparison can become even more granular, using the drop-down menus at the top of the Compare tab.  You can compare the competitors across a specific aspect of the conversation – for example, we can see the data for each these agriculture types as it pertains to the conversation about organic meats.

Agriculture comparison 2

You can narrow your comparison to a specific "tag" or aspect of the social conversation.

Alternatively, rather than comparing volume, sentiment, and demographics for the competitors themselves, we can compare the aspects of the conversation we’re monitoring.  Use the drop-down menus at the top of the Compare tab to select each of the conversation “tags.”  You can compare these aspects across the entire results set or narrow to just a particular competitor.  For example, we might compare the discussions of organics, GMO (genetically modified organisms), local eating, and point-of-purchase when poultry is being discussed.

Agriculture comparison 3

Comparing conversation threads, rather than just competitors, can be an insightful way to examine the data.

We invite our customers to experiment with all parts of the Heartbeat product during the free customer trial, which runs until the end of Thursday, May 27, 2010.  Diving into the Compare tab will really get you thinking about just what YOU want to monitor in the social media universe!

FPinfomart Heartbeat – more than just a dashboard

Posted by Jennifer Stein on May 25, 2010

We hope you’ve had a chance to take advantage of the FPinfomart customer trial of the Heartbeat social media monitoring platform.  The trial has been extended to May 27th, so you’ve still got a few days left to test-drive this exciting product!

Although the launch point for Heartbeat is a graphic dashboard integrated right into your FPinfomart.ca account, it’s important to understand that there’s much more to this product than just that initial screen!  You can click anywhere within this dashboard to open the full application (it will open in a new browser window or tab).

It is interesting to note that the click you make on this dashboard is context-sensitive.  That is to say, if you click on a certain data point you’ll open Heartbeat on a screen showing results relevant to that data point.  So, for example, if I were to notice a spike in the volume of coverage line chart, I could click that data point to load the Heartbeat application to a screen showing me results for THAT day, in the medium on which I’d clicked.

Heartbeat Dashboard

The dashboard screen is clickable, and your click is context-sensitive.

In the screenshot of the dashboard, above, we see a spike in activity in News for May 20th.  I can click that data point to bring up the following screen:

Heartb eat Results Screen

Browse the results set, filtered for you based on where you'd clicked the dashboard.

I hope you’ll experiment with Heartbeat during this final week of the customer trial.  Click around, and discover the rich functionality of this exciting social media monitoring tool.  I’ll continue to post tips to the blog each day this week.

Look Before You Leap: Lesson 5 – Social Media Spam

Posted by Jennifer Stein on May 18, 2010

SpamWelcome to the fifth lesson in our “Look Before You Leap” series.  Our intention is to help you immerse yourself in the content that makes up the Social Media universe.  In addition to reading about particular topics in social media, we encourage you to get involved – either as an observer, or even better, to dive right in and participate in the conversation.  You’ll quickly see how information spreads, how it is used, and why it should matter to your business.

Today’s theme in Social Media Monitoring is Social Media Spam.

The spammers’ aim is not to redirect some of your traffic to their site, which is the obvious initial conclusion; it is to increase their (or their clients’) ranking in search engines. Most search engines now count in a site’s ranking how many other Websites have linked to it. By leaving comments on your site, the spammers’ sites can achieve a slightly higher search engine ranking.

Reading Assignment:

What effect does spam have on your social media monitoring activities?   Why is it critical to ensure spam is eliminated from your monitoring results?

Practical Assignment:

We certainly don’t want you creating spam, but here is an image of some of the comment spam we’ve received recently on THIS blog.

Comment spam

FPinfomart Heartbeat Assignment:

The data you’ll find in Heartbeat is spam-free.  Content considered spam has been removed from the database before it hits your results and charts.  However, take a moment to consider how the presence of spam in your results set would have affect the metrics you see in Heartbeat.

Congratulations, you’ve finished the fifth Look Before You Leap lesson!  You’ve now increased your understanding of social media spam, and why a spam-free database is essential to effective social media monitoring.

Look for our next lesson in this series, to be posted later in the week .
