Halloween is almost here… and we’ve got costumes on our minds!

Lady Gaga is known for her creative costumes – and not just on Halloween!  Several media sources predict that one specific notorious Lady Gaga outfit will be this year’s most popular Halloween costume.

  1. Which Lady Gaga outfit do several media outlets speculate will be most popular this year?
  2. Give a citation for your answer (headline, date, publication name).
  3. BONUS:  Provide a link to an online photo of Lady Gaga in this costume (from the public Web, not from FPinfomart).

Sometimes it’s the little things…

Posted by Jennifer Stein on October 25, 2010

Late last week we implemented a seemingly small, but frequently-requested feature in our full text Newsletter – “return to top.”

Our Newsletter Publisher offers you the option of sending your recipients a summary version (citations with links out to full text on the Web), or a full text version (table of contents at the top of the e-mail, hyperlinked to the full text of the article within the e-mail itself).  For those who prefer the full text Newsletter e-mail, moving back up to the table of contents after reading each article was causing scroll fatigue!

To help you avoid repetitive-strain injury (especially on mobile devices), we’ve added a “return to top” link at the bottom of each full text article in the Newsletter e-mail.

Click the "Return to top" link to jump back to the table of contents within the e-mail newsletter.

Table of contents (newsletter)

You'll be returned to the spot you left off, so you can continue browing the table of contents..

Thank you to all of our users who let us know the importance of this small, but significant convenience.

Changes coming soon to Managed Profiles

Posted by Jennifer Stein on October 20, 2010

If you are a Managed Profiles subscriber (or if you use our Current Events or Industry News functions, which run on the same platform), you may have noticed that these pages don’t look quite the same as the rest of FPinfomart.ca. That is because they are still running on our previous platform.

We have completed the steps necessary to convert these results sets over to our FAST platform. Once we launch these changes (early next week), you’ll notice a few exciting differences:

  • Results in the same single-column format you see throughout the site
  • Navigators available for results sets (date, media, entities)
  • Keyword highlighting in results lists and full text articles
  • Faster, more frequent content updates

This is how Current Events look today.

Current events coming soon

This is how Current Events (and Managed Profiles and Industry News) will look after the changes. Note the highlighted keywords, the single-column results set, and the availability of the Navigators down the right side of the screen.

We hope that you’ll find this new updated functionality will enhance your experience with the Managed Profiles, Industry News, and Current Events modules.

FPinfomart Scavenger Hunt: The origin of a phrase

Posted by Jennifer Stein on October 15, 2010

The rules: the first person to enter the correct answer in this post’s comments will be declared the winner. Please follow the answer format below so that we know you’ve used FPinfomart to find your answer!

A reference book English is a weird language.  We use phrases every day that, from a purely logical perspective, make no sense at all!  It’s often interesting to research the origin of some of our more colourful expressions.

Use FPinfomart to research the origin of an odd (but commonly-known) English-language expression.

  1. What expression did you research?
  2. What is its origin?  How/where/when/why did we start using this phrase?
  3. Give a citation for your response (publication, title, date).

Here are a few examples I found:

  • Elijah McCoy (1844-1929)  was he son of escaped slaves from Kentucky.  McCoy was born in Canada and educated in Scotland. Settling in Detroit, Mich., he invented a lubricator for steam engines (patented 1872). Other inventors tried to copy McCoy’s “oil-dripping cup,” but none of the other cups worked as well as his, so customers started asking for “the real McCoy.” Hence, the origin of the expression.

  • A red herring is a dried, smoked herring. Strong- smelling red herrings were used for training puppy hounds to follow a scent – so the expression red herring came to mean to lay a false trail.
This is no red herring, honest ; your letters” – Daily Mirror (London, Uk), Wed Apr 29 2009
  • It’s raining cats and dogs. Among the various explanations for the origin of this expression is that the drainage of medieval streets was so poor and cats and dogs were so numerous that they frequently drowned during heavy downpours.

What’s more important than monitoring social media?

Posted by Jennifer Stein on October 13, 2010

The short answer:  actually listening to what’s being said, and acting accordingly.

It can be difficult to decide whether to act on a single voice in the crowd – but when a company as large as the Gap takes the advice of its (thousands) of outspoken customers, we should all pay attention.

Not only were they monitoring social media, they made a business decision based on the expressed wishes of those participating in the conversation.  Another excellent example of a large corporation understanding that social media is a dialogue.

New and old Gap logosLast week, Gap unveiled a new logo, one it called “a more contemporary, modern expression.” The retailer’s customers were not so thrilled about the change, and Gap decided to ask users for their logo design ideas instead. However, that course of action has now been reversed, as well.

“Ok. We’ve heard loud and clear that you don’t like the new logo. We’ve learned a lot from the feedback,” the company said on its Facebook Page. “We only want what’s best for the brand and our customers. So instead of crowdsourcing, we’re bringing back the Blue Box tonight.”

Help us improve the accuracy of radio transcripts

Posted by Jennifer Stein on October 12, 2010

radio tower We recently posted an entry describing keyword strategies for radio monitoring, given the potential for mistranscriptions in automatically generated speech-to-text transcripts.

We are embarking on a new project which will create a dictionary of commonly-encountered auto-transcription errors. This dictionary will allow us to translate them to the correct text before presenting them to you. We are soliciting your assistance in populating this dictionary. If you encounter a radio transcription issue, please e-mail the example to me for consideration.   Your submission should include the mistranscription, what the correct text should have been, and, if possible, a citation (Station name, date, and time of broadcast).

For examples of transcription issues, please watch this video.

Please note, this dictionary will be helpful for consistent mistranscriptions, but will not help with one-time errors due to poor sound quality, or punctuation issues.

Thanks for helping us improve our product for everyone!

More Directors and Executives now searchable in Directory of Directors

Posted by Jennifer Stein on October 7, 2010

In addition to the detailed records we gather in the Directory of Directors product, our FP Datagroup collects additional information about people affiliated with Canadian companies through our Corporate Surveys. These two populations are now searchable from a single interface, the Directory of Directors search. As well, names of Directors listed in Corporate Surveys records will be hyperlinked to a Directory of Directors search for further information about each individual (for example, which other boards of directors or companies that person is affilated with).

This change increases the population searchable via Directory of Directors from its former count of 17,000 individuals to a new total of 29,395 individuals.

Introducing the FPinfomart Customer Idea Exchange

Posted by Jennifer Stein on October 5, 2010

My philosophy has always been that our best product ideas come from our users. Those who know me have often heard me say that we take all customer feedback very seriously. We track all incoming suggestions, and I’m proud of the statistic that we’ve implemented 26% of recorded customer feedback in the past 18 months, and have scheduled an additional 17% of these items for future development.

But I still think we can do better.

We’ve embarked on a project called the FPinfomart Customer Idea Exchange. Its purpose is to create a community where FPinfomart users can share their suggestions for the product, both with each other, and with the FPinfomart development team. Users will be able to see the ideas that others have submitted and “vote” on those items that they think would be useful to the user population. This will allow us to better prioritize our development efforts and ensure that FPinfomart is optimally useful to the greatest number of people.

Other features of the Idea Exchange include the ability for me (as Product Manager) to add a status to each idea submitted – such as “reviewing;” “scheduled for development;” or “implemented” (when a suggestion is completed). I will also be able to indicate if an item will NOT be implemented, and if not, give a reason for this.

Users will be able to comment on each others’ suggestions, adding detail and additional ideas.

Access to the Idea Exchange will be by UserID and password, making it a secure community with entry restricted to authorized FPinfomart users.  All current FPinfomart users are eligible to participate in the Idea Exchange, however you’ll need a separate User Name and Password to login (your existing FPinfomart userID won’t work).  To request access to the Idea Exchange, please contact customer service at helpdesk@canwest.com. helpdesk@fpinfomart.ca

We look forward to watching our community grow!
