Full online content for Postmedia newspapers now on FPinfomart

Posted by Jennifer Stein on September 28, 2011

Earlier this year we announced that full content from the nationalpost.com website was now reflected in the nationalpost.com database on FPinfomart.

We’re really excited to announce that effective immediately, all content available on all remaining Postmedia-owned “newspaper.com” sites is now available in their respective databases on FPinfomart.   These sources can be found in the “Online News” section of our source list.

This change will increase the amount of content in these database from a handful of feature stories each day to dozens of articles daily, providing complete coverage from all sections of the sites.  Please note as well that the newspapers’ blogs will no longer be available as separate publications in our Blogs list.  Instead, if content in the newspaper.com’s database originated on a Postmedia newspaper’s blog, the blog name will appear in the either the “publication name” and/or “section” field of the document.

All online content from each newspaper's website is now in one database - both news and blog posts.

This expanded content set will update continuously throughout the day, bringing you the freshest news available.

Check the section field for details about a blog name, or area of the website where this content ran. A permalink allows you go back to the website to view the content item.

TIP:  Looking to search all stories from a particular blog or section of a newspaper’s website?  Fire up the Expert Search interface for QuickSearch or Archives, and use the following search string:

section: “Defence Watch” OR pubname: “Defence Watch”

We must search both the section and publication name fields because the mobile nature of the web content may cause this information to flow to either of these fields.

Searching for the "Defence Watch" blog from the ottawacitizen.com website.

Getting started in social media for business and enterprise [Presentation slides]

Posted by Jennifer Stein on September 22, 2011

There are an almost infinite number of guides and resources available online offering advice on getting started in social media – and just how to go about it is one of the most common questions I’m asked when discussing the Heartbeat social media monitoring platform.

I recently had the opportunity to give a presentation on just this topic [PDF].  Although there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to monitoring and participating in social media for business, this step-by-step thought exercise may give you some ideas on how to begin – whether you decide to dip a single toe, or dive right in.

This slide deck [PDF] combines much of the advice I’ve given in the past, such as this article, and this presentation – along with a few new examples – into a comprehensive guide.

Exclusion Filters Logic Updated

Posted by Jennifer Stein on September 20, 2011

When setting up (or editing) a Personal Profile, you’ll likely have noticed a list of “Exclusion Filters” available to you.  This series of checkboxes allows you to refine your results by excluding specific types of content.  These are preset “Not” clauses that we run for you behind the scenes.

The Exclusion Filters typically involve excluding content where certain words match in any of the Section, Title (headline), or the Story Type (“stotype”) fields of any document.  This can be challenging when papers use unusual nomenclature for section names, or if the Story Type field is not provided by certain publications.  We’ve recently identified some additional patterns to add to our filter logic which should make these work more precisely.

Exclusion Filters

These exclusion filters are shown on the Edit Profile page.

Ever wondered what was REALLY being excluded when you checked those boxes?  Here is the exact logic we are using for each of the exclusion filters, complete with the updates we’ve added this week.

New feature: Item in Folder indicator in results sets

Posted by Jennifer Stein on September 12, 2011

When you’re browsing through multiple results sets for media monitoring or research, and saving selected items to a Folder, it can be difficult to keep track of which items you’ve already clipped – especially if your searches are similar, or related.

Effective immediately, you will see a Folder icon to the left of the Peek for any document that has already been saved to one of your FPinfomart Saved Folders.

Item in folder indicator

The first item has recently been saved to a folder. The second one has not.

There are two limitations to this indicator:

  1. It will be displayed for the most recent 1,000 items that you’ve saved to a single Folder.  Saving a 1,001st item to a Folder would cause the icon to disappear from the first item you’d saved to that Folder.
  2. Each item will show the Folder icon only for 7 days after it has been saved to a Folder.
